Maternity Ward
At Second Chance Cheekye Ranch, we hold a strict “no breeding” policy, but some of the horses who arrive here come already carrying new life—or with a foal at their side. When a pregnant mare enters our care, we welcome not just her, but also the little one she carries, and we take on the responsibility of guiding them both safely into their future.
There’s something profoundly moving about watching a rescued mare raise her baby in peace. These mothers, often having endured hardship themselves, show extraordinary gentleness and devotion. Their foals, wide-eyed and curious, learn quickly that the world can be safe, kind, and full of love.
Foals always remain with their mothers until weaning, and more often than not, they stay with us for another year or two as they grow. It’s rare for a horse under two years old to be adopted, so these youngsters spend their early years roaming the fields, making friends, and discovering who they are—while we quietly celebrate every milestone.
Providing this safe haven for mares and foals is one of the most rewarding parts of rescue, but it also comes with significant costs. Allowing babies the chance to grow up slowly, beside their mothers, without pressure, is a true gift of time and care.
If you’d like to be part of their journey, you can sponsor our Maternity Ward and help us support the youngest lives at SCCR:
